Backyard Concert 2019

On October 25th, at the end of their U.S. tour, The Who joined together with Pink, Foo Fighters, and Kenny Loggins to raise over $4 million for Teen Cancer America and UCLA Health at the 6th Backyard Concert 2019.

Comedian/Actor and host of Deal or No Deal, Howie Mandel, led an auction while Writer/Director Judd Apatow was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening festivities. Held at the private residence of TCA Board Member Jordan Kaplan and wife Christine, the event was co-hosted by TCA Board Chair, Rebecca Rothstein and UCLA Health, Becky Mancuso-Winding.

“The Backyard Concert has become the marquee event for TCA each year, and we’re so grateful to The Who and all the amazing performers who donate their time to help our organization raise money,” said Rothstein. “We’re also deeply appreciative of the efforts of our wonderful partners, and of course all the patrons who help TCA fulfill its mission.”

Among the spectacular items featured in auction, was a customized guitar donated by Peter Bradley Jr., Executive Director of the Buddy Holly Educational Foundation. The authentic replica Gibson J-45 was signed by nearly 70 living music legends such as Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, David Grohl, Roger Daltrey, Pink, Kenny Loggins, Joan Jett, Keith Richards, Peter Frampton, and many more. In a heartfelt moment after The Who’s performance, Daltrey called up a young woman on stage. Allie Newman was treated at the UCLA in the Teen Cancer America Daltrey/Townshend young adult cancer unit in Santa Monica, CA.

“I’m 25 now. I was diagnosed when I was 16 and was given 33 percent chance of living to three years, and this December will mark seven years, cancer free,” said Newman. “When I met him [Roger] I remember him saying that ‘we need more people to help.’ Eight hours after my diagnosis, I had to go to UCLA to get chemo. It [cancer] came back a few times, but I’m still here because of you guys.”

Several actors, philanthropists, musicians, and athletes came out to show support including Dodgers player Justin Turner, entrepreneur John Paul Dejoria, musician Paul Stanley, Journalist/TV Personality Geoff Keighley, and actors Liv Tyler, Adam Sandler, and Harrison Ford.
